The  Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) conducts the Junior Engineer (JE) Exam to recruit candidates for technical posts in Indian Railways.

The exam is held in two stages—CBT 1 and CBT 2—and understanding the detailed syllabus and exam pattern is very important for scoring well.

The RRB JE syllabus covers subjects like Mathematics, Reasoning, General Awareness, General Science, and core technical topics based on engineering streams.

With lakhs of candidates applying every year, knowing what to study helps candidates prepare in the right direction and boost their chances of selection.

RRB JE Exam Pattern

Here’s how the exam is structured:

StageNumber of QuestionsTotal MarksDurationNegative Marking
CBT-110010090 minutes – 1/3rd mark per wrong answer
CBT-2150150120 minutes – 1/3rd mark per wrong answer

In CBT-2, most of the questions come from a technical section.

Minimum Passing Marks

  • For general / unreserved category: 40% in both CBT 1 and CBT 2.
  • For reserved categories (OBC, SC, ST): there is relaxation in minimum required marks.
  • PwBD (Persons with Benchmark Disabilities) candidates may also get additional relaxation in passing marks.

Why This Matters

  • CBT-1 is qualifying in nature. Its main purpose is to filter candidates; the final merit is based on CBT-2
  • The heavy weight of technical ability in CBT-2 means engineering candidates must focus more on their discipline-specific topics.
